After graduation from the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory under Dmitri Bashkirov and leaving the Soviet Union in 1974, following the winning of the Young Concert Artists International Audition in 1976 in New York and the Busoni Competition in 1978 in Bolzano, Boris Bloch launched a career that has taken him to many orchestral engagements, recital series and festivals in different countries and continents. He has appeared as a soloist, with the orchestras of Cleveland and Houston, Pittsburgh and Indianapolis, Vancouver and St. Louis, Denver, New Orleans, Buffalo etc. In Europe Boris Bloch played all three Tchaikovsky concertos with the Staatskapelle Berlin and all five Rachmaninov concertos with the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra. He has been the soloist with the orchestras of Vienna and Berlin, Moscow and St. Petersburg, Junge Deutsche Philharmonic and NDR Symphony of Hanover, Great Polish Radio Orchestra and Philharmonic Orchestra of Bergen, Rome’s Santa Cecilia, RAI of Milan and Maggio Musicale Orchestra of Florence, National Philharmonic Orchestras of Budapest and Sofia, Zurich Chamber Orchestra, the Arturo Toscanini Orchestra of Emilia Romagna and many others.
Among the conductors Boris Bloch has performed with are Kyrill Kondrashin and Lorin Maazel, Philippe Entremont and Christoph Eschenbach, Gerd Albrecht and Edmond de Stutz, Juri Aranovitch and David Zinman, Pavel Kogan and Alexander Lazarev, Janosz Ferencik and Adam Fisher, Emil Tabakov and Alexander Dmitriev, Hobart Earle to name but a few.
The festivals Boris Bloch has participated in include The Berliner Festwochen and Salzburger Festspiele, Luzern Festival and The Flanders Festival, the Festivals of Stresa, Istanbul, Carintischer Sommer of Austria, Varna Summer of Bulgaria, Chopin Festivals in Duszniki of Poland and Marienbad of the Czech Republic, Macedonian Ohrid and Bulgarian Rousse, Schumann-Fest in Düsseldorf, Klavierfestival Ruhr, Piano Festival of Bergamo and Brescia, the Chamber Music Festival of Savonlina, I Grandi Interpreti of Bologna and the very special “Rarities of Piano Music” in Husum, “Outstanding Pupils of Dmitri Bashkirov” in St. Petersburg and Moscow and many others.
Boris Bloch has often been on the jury of international competitions and conducted international master classes including the established Summer academies of Salzburg, Weimar and Santander.
In 1997 the Public Television of Russia broadcast a half-hour film about Boris Bloch in the series “Outstanding Musicians of Russia”. 1998 he commemorated the 25th anniversary of his career in a comeback recital in the Concert Hall of his alma mater, the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. The Moscow Newspaper commented the next day in its review: “Russia must be sorry to have missed this true artist for so long.” This season Bloch was invited by the Essen Philharmonic Society to give four matinées in the Grand Alfred Krupp Hall, performing the works of Haydn, Bach, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Chopin and Liszt.Bloch’s tuition at the Folkwang University has received high praise and recognition. In 2007 he was awarded the music pedagogues’ prize of the Köhler-Osbar-Trust and the city of Duisburg, where the piano department of the Folkwang University has been located since 2002.
